What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. It affects about 20% of adults and, in severe cases, breathing can stop dozens of times per hour or more.

Types of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Caused by airway narrowing or blockage (most common type)

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)

Occurs when the brain doesn't send signals to breathing muscles

Mixed Type

When both obstructive and central types occur together

Risks if Left Untreated

High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
Increased risk of stroke
Type 2 diabetes
Liver problems
Increased risk of car accidents (drowsy driving)
Depression and anxiety

Diagnostic Methods

Polysomnography (PSG)

Overnight test in hospital measuring brain waves, breathing, oxygen saturation, etc.

Home Sleep Test (HST)

Convenient test at home measuring breathing and oxygen saturation

Treatment Methods

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)

Keeps airway open by applying pressure during sleep

Lifestyle Changes

Weight loss, quit smoking, reduce alcohol, sleep on side

Oral Appliance

Device that pulls jaw forward to widen airway

Surgical Treatment

Surgery to widen airway (tonsillectomy, jaw surgery, etc.)
