Optimizing Your Sleep Stages

Understanding sleep stages helps you make better choices about sleep timing and habits. To maximize both deep sleep and REM sleep, you need consistent 7-9 hour sleep schedules, with bedtimes that allow for 4-5 complete cycles.

Early bedtimes (before midnight) help maximize deep sleep, which is concentrated in the first half of the night. Sleeping through to morning without early awakening preserves your REM-rich final sleep cycles.
